Community radio sits at the centre of Australian music discovery, local storytelling and grassroots audience building. It also runs on tight margins, volunteer labour and technology stacks that were rarely built with community broadcasters in mind.

CAST connects the entertainment industry with the technology ecosystem. Through BURGER, our technology scout and adoption platform, we map what companies are building, match it to the problems an industry faces, and track what gets adopted.

This proposal sets out how CBAA and CAST can work together to give the community broadcasting sector visibility into the technology being built for it, around it, and a direct hand in shaping what gets built next.

Nonprofit and membership-driven organisation membership fee.

CBAA joins CAST as a member organisation. Part of the membership includes access to BURGER’s group account as well as first access to new tools CAST builds.

The account gives CBAA the ability to see the technology landscape mapped to community radio challenges, discover and shortlist tools relevant to member stations, share “Tools for Community Radio” with members, receive ongoing intelligence on emerging solutions, and position CBAA as the sector’s trusted filter on technology.

Skills

1. CAST onboarding

Before anything goes live, we run a working sprint with the CBAA team to understand the sector properly. The sprint surfaces the day-to-day operational and technical challenges facing stations, where existing tools fall short, the highest-priority use cases across the network, and the solution categories BURGER should track for CBAA and its members.

This makes CBAA’s group view genuinely useful rather than generic, and produces the challenge set that shapes the hackathon.

2. Launch press release

As part of CBAA joining CAST, we run a joint press announcement and campaign. It does more than announce the membership: it puts out a public call for tools that can help community radio now and into the future, inviting startups and technology providers to come forward with solutions for the sector.

Outcome: launch “Tools for Community Radio,” position CBAA as the association driving technology forward, attract founders building for community broadcasting, and surface a pipeline of solutions because CBAA asked for them.

3. Free trial

Included: first six months for five CBAA member stations receive complimentary individual access to BURGER, so the value is proven at station level before anyone is asked to commit. Trial stations get the full individual experience, including their own adoption tracking. Every station that joins rolls up into the CBAA group view, so the association sees the whole network’s activity in one place.

Optional station membership

$625 per station per year. This is separate and optional; there is no obligation on CBAA to fund it or for individual stations to take it up.

Optional activation: national hackathon

Optional activation: national hackathon
