Industry Connect: Artists Are Still Asking the Same Questions

A couple of weeks back I headed up to Noosa for QMusic Industry Connect program (massive thanks to Ed for having me along) to share some painfully gained ‘knowledge’ I’d picked up along the way as an artist, manager and founder. It was great to answer questions and share what I’d learnt not only from my time in the industry but across all roles/projects since then.
There were two takeaways for me:
1. Artists aren’t engaging with AI. Only a handful of the 40-ish artists raised their hand when asked. Totally cool that some people are fundamentally opposed to the use of AI, but the point I made was if you aren’t using it, understand you could be making your pathway that little bit harder.
2. Artists are still asking the same questions they did 6 years ago (when I used to run the program). Artists either don’t know where to turn to get the fundamentals of releasing music or they aren’t paying attention/trying to find it. Either way, when you spend time trying to work out the fundamentals, you miss the opportunity to experiment and find your edge vs doing what everyone else is doing.
It was awesome sitting on a panel with an old friend who was a big part of YesYou, Tyler and great to meet Aaron and Kriza.
What hit me was the incredibly important role music organisations can play in the future of the industry. To be a source of truth, a way for artists to wade through the noise, to help them not only understand where the industry is going but how they can fit into it.
Thanks for having me 🤗
